WORLD METEOROLOGICAL DAY ON MARCH 23, 2024

TOPIC: AT THE FRONTLINE OF CLIMATE ACTION

Climate change is a real and undeniable threat to our entire civilization. The effects are already visible and will be catastrophic unless we act now. Therefore, the theme of World Meteorological Day 2024 is „At the frontline of climate action “.

Climate actions mean different things to different people. But everyone agrees that those activities are necessary, urgent and means a call to all. We all must act in the same direction. Our meteorological and hydrological communities collect, share and analyze data about weather, water and the environment. These data form the basis for understanding what is currently happening to the climate and how it is changing.

As a priority, hydrometeorological services around the world are engaged in improving their early warning systems, which form the basis of adaptation and disaster risk reduction. However, today many countries are unable to provide these early warnings to protect their people. This is the reason why, WMO (World Meteorological Organizaton) as part of the global community, starts the initiative „Early warning to all “. Every person on Earth should have access to timely and reliable information about the weather and climate risks until the end of 2027.

Climate and weather affect almost every activity, and weather and climate information drive economic growth. We need to do more to turn climate science into services. And we need to make these climate services more accessible to everyone and use them more efficiently.

At the World Meteorological Day, National meteorological and hydrological services are in the centre of attention. They play a key role at risk reduction, development, adaptation, mitigation and sustainability. Their expertise must be incorporated into high-level policy on climate action. Faced with unprecedented environmental challenges, we meteorologists are not mere observers. Instead, we are called to be game changers. Our role as scientists and advocates for the planet has never been more crucial.

Together we stand on the front lines of climate activities as we embrace the journey through collaboration and innovation, using collective expertise to overcome challenges and achieve our shared vision of a safer and more resilient world for future generations – A world where children grow up in harmony with nature.
