The European Aviation Platform seeks M-NAV to join the South East Common Sky Initiative Free Route Airspace (SESCI FRA) by using the shortest route in our region in order to protect the environment and offer airspace users significant benefits along the South East Axis, by delivering the shortest route options. The concept of FRA goes back to 2008 in Europe and roughly 50 ACCs have partially or fully implemented free route airspace. This exceeds the original target of 35 ACCs set by the Network Manager Performance plan.

The most European airspace is expected to have implemented FRA by 2021/2022. This progress is a result of the very close cooperation between the Network Manager of Eurocontrol, the ANSPs, military partners and airspace users. Europe is the first region in the world to have implemented a full FRA concept, although flight efficiency initiatives do exist in various forms in other parts of the world, such as North America and Australia.

This initiative has a positive impact on preserving the environment because of lower Co2 emissions and smaller fuel consumption in the meantime airspace users and passengers will benefit from shorter flight times.

North Macedonia (M-NAV) and Albania (Albcontrol) strive every day to carry out this major project by going operational on December 02, 2021.
